Mook Leong Barred From MCA Poll
KUALA LUMPUR, March 22 (Bernama) -- Former MCA Central Committee (CC) member Datuk Wong Mook Leong's bid to contest in the new party poll on March 28, failed when his nomination was rejected.
Wong, who was very disappointed with the decision, said that the reason given was that he was no longer a central delegate or a member of Parliament.
He said the committee in-charge of the nomination process had no power to decide on his status.
"I am a delegate for three years until 2011. It is clearly stated that I am a central delegate from 2008 to 2011...so, by virtue of being a CC member, I am entitled to three years," he told reporters at Wisma MCA here while showing his CC member pass.
Wong, who has been a CC member for more than 30 years, said only the CC had the power to decide on his status.
"Whether my status is legally correct or not correct, only the CC has the power to decide under article 174. (The) Standing committee does not have power to serve as the Central Committee. They have no right to decline my nomination," he added.
On March 3, Mook Leong and another CC member, Wong Nai Chee, had tendered their resignation, together with former vice-president Datuk Seri Dr Liow Tiong Lai.
However, their resignations sparked controversy due to at least, two conflicting versions on the validity of their right to re-contest in Sunday's fresh polls.
Nai Chee made no attempt to contest in any of the posts this time.
Party secretary-general Datuk Wong Foon Meng had said that under Article 38 of the party constitution, CC members must be elected from the delegates to the general assembly.
